Bryan Kohberger sentenced to life without parole for Idaho student murders

• JUST IN: Bryan Kohberger has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murders of four University of Idaho students. Kohberger declined to speak before he was sentenced.

• Victim impact statements: Friends and families of the victims gave statements, with the surviving roommates outlining the trauma and anxiety they have suffered and the sister of one of the victims calling Kohberger a “sociopath, psychopath, murderer” in scathing remarks.

• Guilty plea: A change-of-plea hearing at the beginning of this month cemented a deal that allowed Kohberger to avoid the death penalty by admitting guilt to charges in the gruesome killings of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen.

Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson acknowledged that not everybody was in agreement with the decision over a plea deal for Bryan Kohberger.

“We accept and recognize that not everybody agrees with the decision we made. But this isn’t a popularity contest. We made what we thought was the most appropriate decision under the law, around the facts,” he said at a news conference after court adjourned today.
